Cleaning can be overwhelming. Maybe you feel swamped with the long list of things that need to get done. Or maybe watching the mess growing makes you want to clean it even less!
Finding the mental energy to tidy up can be tricky. That’s why we are sharing a few tips to trick your mind into wanting to clean!
Tip #1 Find your motivation
The most direct way to want to clean is to have a good reason to do it. Finding the right motivation doesn’t have to be so hard!
Your motivation can be as small as you like; small doesn’t make it less effective! For example, needing more space in your closet or cabinets is a great excuse to declutter. Or, you could have someone over, so you need the living room to look nice!
Tip #2 Take it one step at a time
Breaking down your cleaning tasks can make them seem less daunting! Folding and storing your clean clothes feels like nothing compared to cleaning your whole room.
Making your tasks smaller also applies to the time you use for cleaning. You could separate your house into zones and clean one each day. Also, you could set apart only some time of the day to clean, for example, taking 10 minutes to do a small task and then taking a break.
Tip #3 Get rid of distractions
Getting rid of distractions is about using the time you set up for cleaning to actually clean. Yes, there are way more exciting things than doing chores. However, this task will be over sooner if you focus on it!
For example, try not having your cell phone on you while you clean, or set it to silent mode to avoid looking at it every time a notification goes off (a little bit of time off-screen never hurt anybody!).
You might still want to have your TV on in the background, and that’s fine! Just make sure not to put something on that will steal your attention.
Tip #4 Make it fun
Cleaning doesn’t have to be a dreadful affair! You could listen to something while cleaning.
For example, put on some upbeat music to get you pumped, or listen to that podcast you’ve wanted to check out. You can even catch up on your book club readings by getting an audiobook!
And yes, this seems contradictory to the previous tip, but these kinds of entertainment don’t require too much focus and will still let you clean while keeping your mind distracted yet interested.
Tip #5 Reward yourself
You’ve finished cleaning, good job! Getting a reward is great for motivating yourself to clean. This way, you can have something to look forward to once you’re done.
The reward can be as simple as giving yourself a pat on the back and a few nice words. Or, if you want something a little more elaborate, get a small gift (a little trinket or something more significant). You could also take yourself out to dinner. Anything goes!
Tip #6 Ask for help
Taking care of a whole messy house can be a lot for one person. So, it’s ok to ask for help! You can involve members of your family, or maybe get a friend to help you and help them in return. Sharing chores will make cleaning seem easier.
